Solar On-Grid/Grid Tied Systems
The terms used for this system are Grid tied, On-grid, grid interactive, grid back feeding system. In simple words this system is synchronous to utility grid (Electricity supplied from Electricity board/company).
Components Include
Solar PV Panels, Solar grid tied inverter, Energy meters, Balance of system(BOS) – Wiring, Electrical protection devices, Earthing
How The System Works
Solar PV panels generate electricity when exposed to sunlight. This electricity is in the form of Direct current(DC). The Grid tied inverter needs to be connected to the grid always for normal operation. The Direct current generated by PV panels is then converted to Alternating current(AC) and is fed back into the building for consumption or to the grid if no loads are being used that time.
Note:
Must condition for this system to work is Grid electricity should be available. On power cut or grid failure the Solar on grid system fails to operate even though there is Good sunlight available.

Advantages
- System efficiency is very high up to 98%
- Cost effective when compared to other solar systems since no batteries are involved in installation

- System Maintenance is less. Only maintenance required is Solar panel cleaning
- By using the right metering technique which is Net/Gross metering the excess Solar electricity which is generated by solar panels can be fed back into the grid for later use. Hence there is no wastage of electricity. Here the electricity grid works as a virtual battery.
Disadvantages
- This system cannot be considered as a backup system. During power cut from grid this system ceases to fail even though there is good sunlight. Hence additional backup inverter/battery or diesel generator is required.
